Have you heard about what is probably the most famous Bitcoin transaction ever made? It was carried out by a programmer in Florida named Laszlo Hanyecz, who on May 22, 2010, posted an ad on a Bitcoin forum asking someone to buy two pizzas for him. On his pizzas, he wanted onions, bell peppers, sausage, tomatoes, and mushrooms. The payment for this simple delivery was set at a modest price – 10,000 Bitcoin, which at the time was worth approximately 315 SEK.

The student who took the offer

A then 19-year-old student, Jeremy Sturdivant, accepted the offer, ordered two pizzas from Papa John’s, and in return received 10,000 bitcoin from Hanyecz. The transaction is well-known because it is considered the first physical purchase made with bitcoin. Since then, many Bitcoin enthusiasts around the world celebrate “Pizza Day” on May 22 to commemorate this first purchase.

But Hanyecz didn’t stop there. Throughout 2012, he bought pizzas totaling over 100,000 Bitcoin, explaining that he saw it as free pizza at the time. Looking back, he doesn’t regret it: “I think it’s great that I got to be part of Bitcoin’s early history in this way”, he said to Coin Telegraph in 2019.

The value today

As mentioned, the pizzas were bought for 10,000 Bitcoin. Today, the value of that amount is approximately 10.5 billion SEK. However, Jeremy Sturdivant didn’t hold onto his Bitcoin for long. Instead, he chose to spend the money on travel. He is not as satisfied with his decision, saying that at the time he did what he needed to afford a trip around the U.S. with his girlfriend. He also admits that he would probably have saved his Bitcoin if he had viewed it as an investment.
